The Southeast Asian University Consortium for Graduate Education in Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC) has awarded six Student Thesis Grants this year to graduate students from the Kasetsart University (KU), University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
Through the UC Thesis Grant, each graduate scholar gets US$500 to fund their respective graduate research that falls within the strategic priorities of the consortium.
For 2013, the Food Security Center (FSC) at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany awards up to 20 scholarships for postdoctoral researchers and PhD students for a period of 4 to 6 months. The Center wishes to attract outstanding PhD students and postdoctoral fellows pursuing a career in academia or development collaboration.
SEARCA Alumna, Dr. Michelle V. Paraso (PhD, environmental science, UPLB 2011) was recognized by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) as one of the ten Outstanding Young Scientists (OYS) for 2012.
The OYS Award is given by NAST to deserving Filipino scientists not more than 40 years old, who have made significant impact onscience and technology.
NAST, the Philippine’s premier recognition and advisory body on science and technology, gave due acknowledgment to Dr. Paraso’s contributions to the field of environmental science, specifically her research on animal health and their impact onidentified environmental issues in the province of Laguna. This includes her research on the effects of environmental pollutants on fish health in Laguna de Bay, part of which was her PhD dissertation as a SEARCA scholar. Through her research, targeted interventions were made possible.
The recognition ceremony was held on 12 July 2012 at the Manila Hotel during NAST’s 34th Scientific Meeting. Each awardee received a plaque of recognition, certificate, and cash prize. The OYS awardees are also entitled to a research grant amounting to PHP500,000.00, upon approval of their proposal
The Philippine Society of Agricultural Engineers (PSAE) recognized three SEARCA graduate alumni as outstanding agricultural engineers for 2012 during the recently concluded 62nd annual convention held in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan on 23-27 April 2012.

For a time now, SEARCA has been known to be a leading training provider in the region; and this has been widely recognized specially by its graduate alumni. For the past three months, 15 SEARCA graduate alumni actively participated in several SEARCA-led learning events aimed at improving their technical and managerial competencies.
Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III recently appointed former SEARCA Director and alumnus Dr. Arsenio M. Balisacan as acting Socioeconomic Planning Secretary and Director General of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).
Along with this appointment, Dr. Balisacan will also chair the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), and Philippine Center for Economic Development (PCED). He will serve as vice-chair of the NEDA Board, the Philippines’ highest development planning and policy coordinating body chaired by the President.
On 12 April 2012, Dr. Clarissa Yvonne J. Domingo, an Associate Professor of the College of Veterinary Science and Medicine of CLSU and a 2009 SEARCA alumnus (PhD Research), was recognized as the 2012 OUTSTANDING FACULTY (LEVEL II) by the Central Luzon State University where she has been teaching for almost 29 years. Similarly, on 16 February 2012, she was also recognized as the 2012 PVMA OUTSTANDING VETERINARIAN IN EDUCATION during the 79th Philippine Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) Scientific Conference and Annual Convention held at the L’Fisher Hotel, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.
After serving as Rector of Andalas University in West Sumatra Indonesia for more than six years, Prof. Dr. Musliar Kasim has been appointed by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as one of the Deputy Ministers of Education and Culture in October 2011. As part of the Second United Indonesian Cabinet, Dr. Kasim will be
in charge of the education component of the Ministry, while Dr. Wiendu Nuryanti is in charge of cultural affairs.
Dr. Kasim graduated with a PhD in Agronomy at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, in 1991 under the SEARCA - German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarship program. He holds an MS and BS from Institut Pertanian Bogor and Andalas University, respectively.
